Mayor Youth Council

The City of Natchitoches Mayor Youth Council’s mission is to promote civic engagement and inspire the next generation of leaders by promoting participation in city government and volunteerism.

What is the Mayor’s Youth Council?

  • Created in 2021 with the selection of 25 students by an application process.
  • A semester-long program for Natchitoches Central, Natchitoches Parish Technical and Career Center, St. Mary’s, Louisiana School for the Math, Science, and the Arts, and Lakeview high school students.
  • Works to empower its members to advocate for causes relevant to area youth.
  • Provides our next generation of leaders a voice in city government and community affairs.

What are the requirements for membership?

  • Must complete an application.
  • Must be in the 11th-12th grade attending a public school or private school in the City of Natchitoches.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 2.5.
  • Must commit to attending scheduled meetings and working on many community events.
  • Must participate in a culminating activity focused on advancing the City of Natchitoches.

When are the meetings held?

The Mayor’s Youth Council meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Monday of the month during the school year at the City Council Chambers unless otherwise noted.

What are the benefits?

  • Creates awareness and encourages the involvement of Natchitoches youth in city government and community affairs.
  • Youth learn the inner workings of city government and use their voice as the leaders of tomorrow.
  • Enhances civic participation and positive youth activism.
  • Establishes a network that benefits our future; youth have access to the Mayor and City Council during their one-year term.

Acceptance on the Mayor's Youth Council

  • Enrollment is limited and diversity is sought in every class.
  • Applicants will be selected based on advice from local schools.
  • Letter of acceptance will be mailed or electronically sent to students selected.
