The Mayors Youth Council

The Mayor’s Youth Council is comprised of high school seniors who attend Natchitoches high schools.  Members are selected by the Mayor’s Office to serve on the Council based on academic performance, community service, teacher recommendations and the ability to serve as a leader.

The Mayor’s Youth Council meets regularly through the fall and spring semesters to learn more about the Natchitoches community and the functions of city and parish government.  Guest speakers often lecture about special programs in Natchitoches such as recycling, drug prevention and Teen Court.

Members of the Youth Council are required to perform community service during the school year which includes a holiday canned food drive, citywide cleanups, Witch Way to Main Street, Cookies with Santa and Bloomin’ on the Bricks.

Each spring, the Mayor’s Youth Council participates in Youth Government Day, which allows the students to “shadow” a city department.  The students elect amongst themselves a Mayor, City Council and Clerk of the Council to conduct a mock City Council meeting in which issues of concern are discussed and voted upon.
