"The Murals of Clementine Hunter" Grand Opening Exhibit Reception

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame will host a reception to celebrate the opening of this new exhibit, which focuses on recently restored murals painted by internationally recognized folk artist Clementine Hunter. Best known for her smaller paintings, Hunter completed these murals in 1955 at the urging of Melrose Plantation resident and librarian Franҫois Mignon. The murals decorated the walls of historic African House—one of the plantation’s outbuildings—until last year, when the priceless works were removed for restoration by a team of fine art conservators. Like many of Hunter’s other creations, the murals document the social life and customs of African Americans living in the Cane River region. This exhibit also includes some of Clementine Hunter’s other large-scale artworks and will be on display through April 2016.

The opening reception will take place at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame located at 800 Front Street, Natchitoches, LA  71457 and is free and open to the public.  For more information call 318-357-2492.
