Natchitoches Historic District Wallking Tours (11am & 2pm)

Cane River National Heritage Area and the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission offers guided walking tours of the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District twice daily at 11am & 2pm, Tuesday through Saturday. 

The walking tours will cover topics such as: the Cane River region prior to European contact; the French & Spanish colonial period; antebellum plantation culture and period; Reconstruction and tenant farming; architectural history; and Creole and Catholic culture, history and customs. The tours are family friendly and meant to engage all ages.

Tours are free and will begin at the Natchitoches Area Convention and Visitors Bureau located at 780 Front Street. For large group tours, please contact the Cane River National Heritage Area in advance at 318.356.5555.

Return to the 50's Classic Car Show

The Return to the 50's Classic Car Show will take place Friday Oct. 2 and Saturday Oct. 3 downtown on the riverbank. Experience the charm of the original French colony in Louisiana. Natchitoches (Nack-a-tish) was established in 1714, and retains its European flavor through its architecture, heritage and lifestyle.   • 5:30-8:00 - Fish Fry with live music on the Riverbank; Poker Run Score sheets will be turned in here by 6:00pm. Results will be announced at 7:00pm. We’ll also have registration at the same time;
  • Fish Fry to registered cars (2 tickets per registered car) additional and public tickets can be purchased for $20.00 each.

  • 7:00-12:00 - Car Show Registration at Bank of Montgomery parking lot (accessible from Second Street);
  • 7:00-4:00 - 9th Annual Car show downtown Natchitoches;
  • Live entertainment from three stages throughout the day;
  • Shops, restaurants, museums, and more;
  • Free participant t-shirts to the first 100 registered cars;
  • 4:00 - Over 60 awards will given out on the riverbank.

  • Metoyer-Brown House (366 Rue Jefferson) - Francois Benjamin Metoyer, son of Claude Thomas Metoyer, built this house in 1850. The house was constructed by Trizzini and Soldini for the Metoyer Family at a cost of $17,000. It is typical 2-story Late Greek Revival with French influence. Remodeled in the early 1900s and again in 1974 when original architecture of the house was preserved.
  • Chamard-Dunahoe House (120 Rue Amulet) - The architectural style of this house, circa 1788, is French-Colonial with hand-hewn cypress rafters and bousillage walls. Originally fitted with its own chapel, many marriages and baptisms were performed here.
  • Chaplin House (434 Rue Second) - In 1893, the one story Victorian House was built without plans or drawings, for Thomas Chaplin, by a man known as Zeno. Later, apartments were added in the attic to board college students and professors. Renovations were made in 1978 by Dr. Mildred Bailey. The floors are original heart pine. Several Clementine Hunter works can be seen.
  • Prudhomme-Rouquier House (446 Rue Jefferson) - A magnificent example of French vernacular half timber construction, it is the largest known example of bousillage (mud and moss) in teh United States. Built in 1782 on land acquired through a Spanish land grant, it was extensively remodeled in 1825 to the Federal and Greek Revival facade you see today.

Natchitoches Historic District Wallking Tours (11am & 2pm)

Natchitoches Historic District Wallking Tours (11am & 2pm)

Cane River National Heritage Area and the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission offers guided walking tours of the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District twice daily at 11am & 2pm, Tuesday through Saturday. 

The walking tours will cover topics such as: the Cane River region prior to European contact; the French & Spanish colonial period; antebellum plantation culture and period; Reconstruction and tenant farming; architectural history; and Creole and Catholic culture, history and customs. The tours are family friendly and meant to engage all ages.

Tours are free and will begin at the Natchitoches Area Convention and Visitors Bureau located at 780 Front Street. For large group tours, please contact the Cane River National Heritage Area in advance at 318.356.5555.

Memory Painting: An Evening with Folk Artist Juanita Leonard will take place at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum at 800 Front St., Natchitoches, LA 71457. The Museum contact number is (318) 357-2492.

Driven to paint, preach, and spread the word of God, Juanita Leonard is one of Louisiana’s most visible folk artists. Leonard’s colorful paintings of farm life

and her spiritual journey are distinct and can be found on boards, tins, and throughout her home and churches. On October 27, at 6:00 pm, join

Dr. Shane Rasmussen at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum as he introduces and interviews Juanita Leonard.

Discussion with the audience to follow.

The event is FREE and open to the public.

The 3rd Annual Pumpkin Glow will take place downtown in Beau Jardin.

HDBA is excited to bring you the Third Annual Pumpkin Glow. Bring your family and friends to walk along the glowing path of carved jack-o-lanterns in Beau Jardin on Rue Beauport. Admission is free! Enter the gate top of Beau Jardin or North end next to Roque House. Pumpkin glow begins at 6:00 pm.

 

PUMPKINS NEEDED!

HDBA would like to have a minimum of 200 carved pumpkins to help make our path! You provide the pumpkin, and we’ll provide the candle!!! Pumpkin drop off will be from 3:00-5:00 pm at the Roque House located on Rue Beauport. Come join us and be a part of this great family event! For more information call Dawn Wells at 318-729-8282.

 

GROUPS BRINGING 10 OR MORE PUMPKINS!

Groups and/or businesses entering 10 or more pumpkins will have a sign posted along the path with their name. Call Dawn Wells at 318-729-8282 and let us know how many pumpkins you plan to enter so we can build toward our goal!

 

Natchitoches Historic District Business FB page will be updated as we get closer to the event! We cannot guarantee pumpkin placement on the path unless pumpkins are delivered at the same time and marked on the back.

Witch Way to Main Street Set for October 31
Free Trick-or-Treating Event for Children

 

NATCHITOCHES – The City of Natchitoches and Natchitoches Main Street Program will sponsor Witch Way to Main Street, a safe and free trick-or-treating event, in downtown Natchitoches on Saturday, October 31, 2015 from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

 

Witch Way to Main Street will take place on the downtown riverbank and will allow children age 12 and younger to trick-or-treat at participating downtown businesses and sponsored booths.  Witch Way will also feature face painting, Sparky the Fire Dog, a Haunted House, tours of the “Haunted” Natchitoches Parish Library Bookmobile, games and more!

 

Children must be in costume and accompanied by an adult to participate.  Candy and prizes will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.  Natchitoches police officers will be on duty to ensure children’s safety.

 

Area businesses and organizations are encouraged to sponsor booths and games at Witch Way.  Booths may feature interactive games, activities and/or candy distribution.
