Natchitoches Historic District Walking Tours

Cane River National Heritage Area and the Natchitoches Historic District Development Commission offers guided walking tours of the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District daily at 10am, Tuesday through Saturday. 

The walking tours will cover topics such as: the Cane River region prior to European contact; the French & Spanish colonial period; antebellum plantation culture and period; Reconstruction and tenant farming; architectural history; and Creole and Catholic culture, history and customs. The tours are family friendly and meant to engage all ages.

Tours are free and will begin at the Natchitoches Area Convention and Visitors Bureau located at 780 Front Street. For large group tours, please contact the Cane River National Heritage Area in advance at 318.356.5555.

Boots in the Grass is Walter Delphin's autobiography. It is part historical novel set amidst the Creole culture in the Cane River farm community of Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana, and it also covers his time in Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles, California as a young man.

His story takes you through the elephant grass of the Vietnam War, his subsequent personal heartbreak after returning from the war, and his life-long struggle with PTSD. Join us as Walter reads excerpts from his book at the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame and Northwest Louisiana History Museum. Hear his story, meet him in person, and buy a signed copy of his new book.
