The Natchitoches Humane Society, a non-profit organization, was formed to improve the lives of animals throughout Natchitoches Parish. The Society works closely with the Natchitoches Animal Shelter to promote adoptions, and the Society is a major proponent of spaying and neutering. In efforts to increase spaying and neutering, the Society provides financial assistance vouchers to individuals residing in Natchitoches Parish who adopt a pet or who are in a low-income bracket.
The Humane Society collaborates with rescue groups around the country and in Canada to place some of the unwanted and abandoned animals in our parish. An alliance between the Humane Society and the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office and Sheriff Victor Jones has led to the creation of Happy TAILS - a housing facility for animals awaiting transport to rescue groups. The Humane Society also investigates reports of animal cruelty and neglect, and pursues prosecution of any individuals charged with such crimes. The primary focus of the Society, however, is a reduction in the number of homeless animals by promoting spaying and neutering, encouraging adoption, and educating the public about responsible pet ownership.
